Baalbek: The City of the Sun and Colossal Stones.

Long before Rome, this ground in the Beqaa Valley belonged to Baal — the storm god of the Canaanites and Phoenicians, lord of rain and harvest. The city still carries his name.

The Greeks and Romans called it Heliopolis — the City of the Sun — and raised their greatest temples on ground that was already sacred. Beneath them lie some of the largest stones ever cut by human hands: blocks weighing hundreds of tons each, lifted into place without a single machine. One still rests in the quarry where it was carved, too heavy to ever move.

The stones are Roman. The ground is older. The name is ours.

We built the kingdom that built temples.
